Counting Stars Executive Director, Jennifer Bourget, shares her inspirational story behind starting this organization:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” This quote by Margaret Mead has resonated with me for quite some time. I have always said I wanted to change the world, and I believe I am on the right path, but I know I can’t change the world alone.
My journey to start Counting Stars, Inc. began in March 2023, when I realized I couldn’t continue in the school district. Like many educators, I was burning out and feeling helpless. Children with disabilities were increasingly being isolated from their peers, families were receiving less support, and their voices were being silenced. I believed I could establish a community-based agency to offer services and support that were either insufficient in our community or had long waitlists. So, I did!
We live our why every day at Counting Stars! Our mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. As an agency, we strive to empower, include, and advocate for all. We aim to provide wrap-around services that can make an impact in the child’s home, community, and school. Our services focus not only on the child but also on the entire household or family. My goal is to remove barriers and limitations for our kiddos and their families, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live their best lives. It takes a village to raise a child, especially one with more significant needs. Counting Stars’ staff becomes a part of that child’s village. Never underestimate the role you play in making a significant difference in that child or family’s life. This isn’t just a job; it truly is an opportunity for you to change the world! As we serve with kindness, respect, and joy, others will see the amazing things our children can do. By listening and validating how our children and families feel, we become a better, more understanding version of ourselves.
While on this journey, I joke that I’ve become annoyingly joyful! I am finally living my purpose and my dream. I challenge all of you today to reflect on your purpose and how you are fulfilling your dreams. I believed I could, so I did, and so can you!
