The Story Behind Counting Stars

Counting Stars Executive Director and Founder, Jennifer Bourget, shares the inspiration behind starting this organization:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

This quote by Margaret Mead has resonated with me for quite some time. I have always said I wanted to change the world. I believe I am on the right path, but I also know I cannot change the world alone.

My journey to start Counting Stars, Inc. began in March 2023, when I realized I could no longer continue working in the school district. Like many educators, I was experiencing burnout and feeling increasingly helpless. Children with disabilities were being isolated from their peers, families were receiving less support, and their voices were not always being heard.

I believed I could create a community-based agency that provided services and support that were either limited in our community or came with long waitlists. So, I did.

We live our “why” every day at Counting Stars. Our mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. We strive to empower, include, and advocate for every child and family we serve while providing wraparound support that can make a meaningful impact at home, in the community, and at school.

Our work goes beyond the child. We recognize that meaningful change happens when we support the entire family and household. My goal is to remove barriers and limitations for our kiddos and their families so everyone has the opportunity to live their best lives.

It truly takes a village to raise a child, especially a child with more significant needs. At Counting Stars, our staff become part of that village. Every interaction is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a child's or family's life. This isn't just a job. It is an opportunity to change the world.

When we serve with kindness, respect, and joy, others begin to see the incredible things our children can do. When we listen to and validate the experiences of children and families, we become better, more compassionate, and more understanding versions of ourselves.

Along this journey, I often joke that I've become annoyingly joyful! I am finally living my purpose and my dream, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do so alongside the amazing team, children, and families who make Counting Stars what it is.
